Coaching, Therapy, or Both?

You want to feel better, think clearer, and get unstuck. Maybe you have thought about coaching. Maybe therapy. The truth is, you do not have to choose.

When I first went looking for support, I was running my own business, parenting young kids, and working in a senior role at a large organization. I was stretched too thin, dropping balls everywhere, and feeling overwhelmed. I tried coaching. I tried therapy. And I quickly realized I needed both. The emotions that were getting in my way were also shaping my actions and goals. What I really wanted was someone who could see both lenses and shift with me as I needed.

That is part of what led me to become a therapist. I wanted to straddle these two worlds and support people like me, people who value the business and leadership context but also need the grounding and care that therapy brings.

Coaching is future focused. It helps clarify goals, build strategy, and create accountability. It is what helps you level up, sharpen your leadership, or move with more purpose toward what matters most.

Therapy supports both growth and healing. It is there when stress, anxiety, burnout, or old patterns keep you stuck. It gives you a space to reset and strengthen your mental health so you can move forward with clarity and resilience.

With approaches like Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), the overlap becomes clear. Both coaching and therapy put your goals, strengths, and future front and center. Research shows that what makes the biggest difference is not just the techniques, it is the relationship itself. Having someone who understands your world and can connect with your context makes real change more likely.

That is why my approach blends both. You do not have to decide before you walk in. Some days you might need strategy and accountability. Other days you might need space, reflection, and support. We will shift depending on what you need most.

And here is the practical side. In Canada, therapy with a regulated professional is often covered by extended health benefits, while coaching usually is not. That means you can access goal driven, solution focused support with coverage that makes it more sustainable.

Bottom line: You do not have to choose between therapy and coaching. You can have both, tailored to you, in one space, and focused on the changes that matter most.
